A car billowed heavy smoke on the eastbound side of Interstate 86, but those inside escaped uninjured.
Fire crews responded to a reported car fire Sunday evening by exit 59 near Lowman and Wellsburg.
Joseph Morey, the First Assistant Chief of The Wellsburg Fire Department told 18 News that the fire started because of an electrical issue with the car’s heating system.
The inside of the car, a Chevy Malibu, suffered severe damage.
The right eastbound lane was reopened after the fire was put out.
The Wellsburg Fire Department was assisted by the City of Elmira Fire Department and New York State Department of Transportation. Chemung County Sheriff Deputies were also on the scene.
