United to offer flights to Dulles

Local News

The following is a news release.

Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and the Elmira Corning Regional Airport Director of Aviation Bill Hopper are excited to announce United Airlines will soon offer direct flights to Washington Dulles International Airport. Starting in March 2019, United Airlines will replace its Newark services with direct flights to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) two times a day.

“We were very excited when United started its Newark service out of ELM this past year. We are even more pleased with their decision to now move their hub to Washington Dulles International Airport.  This hub will give the business and pleasure travelers even more connections to both the national and international markets and will have fewer weather related cancellations,” says Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli.

United Airlines announced this is part of an overall strategy shift. United is shifting shorter-haul flights to Elmira, New York; Lexington, Kentucky; and Manchester, New Hampshire from New York/Newark to its Washington Dulles hub. United says this change will greatly increase reliability to make connections and also provide greater efficiencies to local air travelers. In May 2018, United announced they were shifting other Newark markets to Washington Dulles including Chattanooga, Tennessee; Ithaca, New York; and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania citing a new network strategy to connect more traffic over their Dulles hub.

“The news of United service to Washington Dulles International Airport is very exciting. Elmira Corning Regional Airport looks forward to the twice daily direct service to the nation’s capital as well as the highly efficient and highly reliable connections to United’s extensive network”, says Bill Hopper, Director of Aviation. “This is an exciting time with the new gateway to the area for air travelers and the best service offered in the Twin Tiers and Finger Lakes regions.”

Flights will depart from the Elmira Corning Regional Airport at 6:05 AM and 2:21 PM. Flights will depart from Washington Dulles at 12:30 PM and 5:13 PM. Flights will be approximately an hour and 40 minutes.

“We are very pleased for several reasons that United Airlines will be providing non-stop service to our nation’s capital at Dulles Airport. The Washington, D.C. area is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and offers numerous business and vacation opportunities for area residents. Also, access to Dulles opens up additional connections for travel to destinations in the South, on the West Coast and overseas. Finally, United’s decision should result in more on-time arrivals and departures which should improve the traveling experience for those traveling from the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport,” explains Tom Tranter, President of Corning Enterprises.

“Business in the Southern Tier exists on a global level and in order to be competitive in that market, connectivity is crucial. The local business community is looking forward to utilizing the better national and international connections this route to Washington Dulles International Airport will provide. The ability to fly globally from our regional airport is a huge asset for the business community and we’re excited by this new development,” say Kamala Keeley, President & Chief Executive Officer Chemung County Chamber of Commerce.
