Upstate N.Y. WWII vet tells emotional story of fighting on D-Day, returning home

Local News

George Bakun is a 95-year old World War II veteran. He currently lives in Troy, New York at the Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

Bakun was on the front lines, fighting on French soil, on D-Day. He served in the 299th Combat Engineering Battalion alongside his childhood friend.

The decades that have passed since that fateful day have not erased the scars of war for George.

“He came back a man,”said his sister Rose. “He left a boy and came back a man.”

George returned home with his arm in a cast after his vehicle hit a mine. Rose says it wasn’t until they got older she learned he fought in Normandy.

“He didn’t talk about the war for year and years,” said Rose. “I never even knew he was there in Normandy for many many years.”

George says he would do it all again. “If I had to. Yes. Every G.I. would say, ‘If they had to.'” When they come and see guys like you, it was worth it.”
