The Elmira Police Department located the suspect of a hit and run after a witness called 911 and remained on the phone with dispatchers while following the car.
18 News exclusively spoke to Jimmy Melton, the witness who helped officers find ths suspect, 40-year-old Sara Harnas of Elmira Heights.
“I was headed home from work and saw a car coming with the windshield smashed in,” Melton said. “She was going off road. There was a bicycle on one side and a guy laying on the other side of the road.”
Melton followed the driver as he was on the phone with dispatchers giving them a description of the car and location they were traveling in.
“I turned around and chased her,” Melton said. “She didn’t look like she had a care for what happened in my opinion. She hit someone and was just going to keep driving. I just felt like I was doing my part. I think anybody if they see something wrong, they should tell someone or do something about it.”
According to the Elmira Police Department, they are not releasing the identity of the bicyclist yet, but he is hospitalized in serious condition.
