Local News

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – West Elmira Police Chief Peter Michalko officially retired on Friday with a walkout ceremony at the West Elmira Fire Station.

Michalko, who served in West Elmira for more than 30 years, was surrounded by friends, family, and co-workers as he stepped away.

Michalko announced his retirement on social media last month.

Upon serving the residents of West Elmira for 30+ years I have decided the time has come to pass the torch and retire. I am one of the lucky few that can honestly say that I have lived my childhood dream and served as a Police Officer. I became a Police Officer to help people, save lives, and make a difference, I believe I have accomplished those goals. I leave the Department in very capable hands and am confident that the transition will be smooth and the level of community policing will continue at the highest level. I would like to thank my co-workers for always giving 100% and making my job easier these last 12 years as I served as Chief of Police.

I am thankful for the opportunity to have served the residents from June 1, 1989, until my retirement in August 2019 and hope I have done so with honor, integrity, fairness. and compassion. I would like to thank the Town Board of the Town of Elmira for maintaining such a positive and cooperative working relationship during my time as Chief and for allowing me to recruit some of the finest and most experienced Officers in NY State. It has been a pleasure working for you.

I would like to say a special Thank You to my family, my children, BJ, and Catie, and my bride, AnnMarie, for the patience and understanding for all the missed birthdays, holidays, and special occasions while allowing me to serve the community, I am truly blessed.
So, as I start my vacation which will take me into retirement I say Thank You, it has been one hell of a ride !!

Sincerely, Chief Peter Michalko ( Retired )
