Organizers of the Wineglass Marathon say the race is about more than just running but also giving back.
To date, the Marathon has donated almost half a million dollars to local nonprofit organizations.
Wineglass proudly announced it distributed $85,000 in donations to over 50 organizations last year bringing the grand total to around $450,000 since the donation policy began in 2011, and it’s not just monetary donations that are given.
“We work with all levels of law enforcement across the board and one of the things that we’ve done is given them bikes,” Race Director Sheila Sutton said. “They use them the day of the race but then they use them all throughout the year for local, and state, and sheriff’s departments.”
The marathon is a community event and takes about 2,500 volunteers to run it, so being able to give back to those organizations that volunteer, they say, helps them achieve their mission and is the best part of what they do.
