Local organizations to help domestic abuse victims with packages of soap and shampoo

News

Those overcoming domestic abuses face a challenging recovery, but there is a partnership that looks to help their recovery be smoother.

That partnership is making care packages for them. Each of these packages has soap, shampoo, and other toiletries.

These care packages are a collaboration between Catholic Charities of Schuyler And Chemung and Little Peeps Play Care.

“It’s something that’s not usually thought about, that people need these types of items,” Valerie Colunio, owner and director of Little Peeps Play Care, said. “Sometimes you can go to food banks, but you really can’t go to a soap bank so this is something to give back and when people really need it.”

Colunio is one of the organizers of this effort.

The bags will be handed out to victims as they may have little to nothing with them when they leave a domestic abuse situation.

“Sometimes they’re leaving dangerous situations and they don’t leave with very much,” Katie Rhodes, the marketing director for Catholic Charities, said. “So being able to supply personal care items is a huge, huge blessing for them.”

The drive will continue through March. If you would like to help, you can donate items at Little Peeps Daycare (301 Demarest Pkwy, Elmira), Dixie Lanes (1196 Broadway St, Elmira), and the Elmira Elks Club (300 E Gray St, Elmira). Place your donations in the purple bins.
