President Trump gave his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.
Local political commentators, Democrat Leslie Danks Burke and Republican Tom Santulli watched the address live from our studios. They gave their reaction on 18 News at 11 p.m.
“I thought it was interesting what he talked about which was predominately immigration, and his belief that if we halt immigration into this country we will solve all our countries problems,” Burke said. “But he didn’t talk about the actual problems facing our country, such as education. He did not talk about the millions of Americans who just lost paychecks due to the shutdown. He did not talk about the damage that the republican tax bill is causing to working Americans by giving tax welfare to billionaires. He sidestepped them by talking about immigration solely.”
“I look at it a little differently because I think the President spoke about what he should have talked about,” Santulli said. “The best economy this country has seen in decades, the lowest unemployment in 30 years, there’s 300,000 new jobs. I think there is a lot of good in what he talked about. This is a speech that you can’t hit every topic. The State of Union address is a feel good speech. Some topics get hit, and some don’t. But overall, I think the President did a good job. He spoke about the strong military and people are concerned about the order.”
