Local toddler diagnosed with rare cancer, family asks community for help

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Ashley Baysinger and Anne Wood stopped by 18 News Today to discuss an upcoming car wash to raise money for medical expenses for 16 month old Kyler Wood.

At just 14 months old, Kyler Wood was living a normal and healthy life when his babysitter felt a large lump in his abdomen. Kyler’s parents took him to Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where radiology exams and lab work were performed. After many tests, doctors discovered that Kyler had stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is a rare form of cancer that most often affects children 5 or younger. Since his diagnosis in July, Kyler has undergone a series of treatments including chemotherapy and blood and platelet transfusions.

With all of the treatments Kyler requires, and travel to see specialists in Rochester, medical expenses have been adding up for Kyler’s parents, Ashley Baysinger and Carl Wood. To ensure young Kyler continues to receive the best care during his fight against Neuroblastoma, Ashley and Carl will be hosting a car wash benefit.

The benefit will be held Saturday, August 25, at JW Detailing located at 105 Kendall St, in Horseheads. The event goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be food, drinks, music, and it is open to the public.

All proceeds from the benefit will go toward medical expenses, travel and living expenses, as they will be off work for an unknown amount of time to care for Kyler.
