Chemung County Sheriffs Office receives $100k grant from US Department of Justice

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office along with other local law enforcement agencies held a press conference on Thursday on Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant that was awarded to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office titled Operation Take Back the Streets.

The county was awarded $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice. This will allowed the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office to collaborate with law enforcement partners in the county to ensure the safety of its citizens.

“We will be targeting high crime areas within the county,” said Chemung County Sheriff, William Schrom. “Focusing on drug interdiction, hotel interdiction, human trafficking interdiction, warrant details, and other locations known for high crime or violent activity.”

Sheriff Schrom said there are some restrictions on where the funds go towards and it must be allocated over time.

“This grant benefits every agency in this county, not just ours,” Sheriff Schrom said. “The monies awarded will be utilized for every agencies’ personnel that participates.”

The grant lasts for one year and will help serve the county until August of 2021.
