Millport woman charged with welfare fraud

Rene Harrington, 36, of Millport, N.Y. was arrested on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019 on a warrant for Welfare Fraud 3rd Degree, Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, and Offering a False Instrument for Filing 1st Degree.

According to the City of Elmira Police Department, from April 2015 to May 2018, Harrington submitted false documents to the Chemung County Department of Social Services for the purpose of establishing and maintaining her eligibility for public assistance, including, food stamps. 

An investigation by the Welfare Fraud Investigation Unit found that Harrington received $19,000 in food stamp assistance she was not entitled to.

Welfare Fraud 3rd and Grand Larceny 3rd are both class D Felonies and Offering a False Instrument for Filing 1st Degree is a class E Felony.
