The road to recovery just got a little brighter for some young hospital patients.

Audi of El Paso donated several luxury toy cars and SUVs to the El Paso Children’s Hospital on Friday, making the trip to the operating room less daunting.

“It has almost completely cleared the separation anxiety from the parents,” nurse Alex Uranga told KTSM. “It really does benefit them a lot.”

The hospital used to transport patients to surgery using wheelchairs but is now switching gears — allowing patients to get behind the wheel of the fun-sized Audis.

“As soon as we turn on the cars, that noise that comes up gets their attention, and they’re more than willing to try and drive it themselves,” Uranga said.

The dealership says it’s all in an effort to help put a smile on kids’ faces, regardless of their situation.

“It makes the experience a little bit better,” General Manager Joe Negrete said. “Whenever we get to see customers smile and children smile, that’s really what we work every day towards.”

Hospital officials say the toy cars are available to patients ages two and up who are scheduled for surgery.
