UPDATE: 5 A.M. – The Elmira Fire Department tells 18 News they do not yet have a cause to the nativity fire in Wisner Park. However, they believe it to be accidental.
The nativity scene in Elmira’s Wisner Park, one of the most prominent symbols of Christmas and the Christian faith burned down overnight.
Elmira Fire and Police were called to the scene around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday for a fire in the park. When they arrived the found the nativity on fire.
Smoke could be see billowing into the night sky as the creche burned. Main Street was blocked off as crews worked to put out the blaze. No word yet from police or fire on how the nativity caught fire.
The nativity represents the scene of Jesus Christ’s birth as described in the gospels, the first part of the New Testament of the Holy Scriptures. It’s displayed in homes or public places at Christmas.
