(UPDATE – 11:10 a.m.) Elmira Police say that the collision occurred after the driver of the school bus failed to stop at a stop sign on Oak Street. The driver of the garbage truck attempted to avoid a collision, but was unable to.
When the bus was struck, it spun around and hit a utility pole before turning onto its side. The driver and the lone student who was on the bus at the time were able to safely exit. The student was not injured, but was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the garbage truck was transported to a local hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries.
The driver of the school bus was ticketed for failure to stop at a stop sign.
No injuries are reported for the bus accident on East Washington Avenue in the City of Elmira Monday morning.
