Opening Day of Harness Racing at Tioga Downs

News

Tioga Downs opened it’s 11th season of harness racing with a Kentucky Derby celebration of their own Saturday.

It was a derby party with the crowd, big hats, mint julips, and the horses, of course.

The first post was at 5:00 p.m. with a lot of betting taking place.

Spectators cheered on the stands hoping to win.

‘Warrawee Preferred’ rode to victory in the first race of the day.

And it’s not just about racing and big bets – it’s also about fashion – Tioga Downs held it’s very own derby hat contest.

Carol Dey and Audrey Calb won the hat contest with their matching pink rose hats and scarves.  They called themselves the “Rosettes” because it’s “one for the roses.”

Whether winning or losing, most people said it’s hard to leave unhappy.

Tioga Downs racing season goes on until September 16, 2017.
