Elmira Heights Police closed off part of 11th Street in between Oakwood Ave and Robinwood Ave around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Elmira Heights Police Chief Rick Churches told 18 News that officers responded to a call for a welfare check on a man in his forties.

When they arrived the individual was uncooperative. State Police and Chemung County Sheriffs Departments were also called to the scene. Because the individual was not cooperating with officers, they thought it would be safest to have sheriffs officers in tactical gear.

Next-door neighbors told 18 News that around 3 p.m. they were asked to leave their homes around while police were handling the situation. Police said there was one other person in the house, believed to be the individual’s significant other.

Just before 6 p.m. police were able to get the individual into an ambulance and he was taken to St. Joseph’s  Hospital for further evaluation.
