Elmira’s Republican Mayor Dan Mandell is running for re-election, and he’s facing a political newcomer, 24-year-old Democrat Alex Sweet.
Mandell submitted his designating petitions to the Chemung County Board of Elections this week, according to his Facebook page. Mandell will appear on the Republican, Conservative and Independence ballot lines in the November 5, 2019, General Election.
Alex Sweet is challenging Mandell. The 24-year-old lifelong Elmira resident is a political newcomer who will appear on the Democratic ballot line. Sweet said he submitted his designating petitions this week also, receiving more than the needed signatures.
Sweet currently works at the Department of Social Services. He said he’s running to bring needed changed to the city. Sweet said the biggest driving factor of change is community involvement.
