Prevention Needs Assessment data helps Tioga County educators plan prevention, intervention programs

Educators gathered in Owego Tuesday to discuss how to keep kids on the right path.

A forum was held at the Tioga County Office Building to highlight the results of the 2017 Prevention Needs Assessment survey that was conducted this past Fall.

The study was done to gather information needed to help plan prevention and intervention programs to address problems such as alcohol and drug use along with violence in schools.

Population Health Coordinator Mary Maruscak says prevention measures need to be addressed early in a child’s life.

“We’re seeing students starting to use substances earlier. So we want to provide not only prevention education but alternatives to dealing with things they might feel are difficult,” said Maruscak.

The survey collected data from the six school districts in Tioga County for 8th, 10th and 12th grade students.

Maruscak says they will do the study again this year to see the effect of the prevention measures that will be implemented.
