Public invited to take “STEPS” to end poverty in Steuben

The community is invited to participate in the 11th annual STEPS Walk, where walkers take Steps To End Poverty in Steuben. The walk raises both awareness about poverty in Steuben County and funds for Turning Point poverty services, which work to end poverty across Steuben County for one individual, one family, one child at a time. The event is free and open to the public.

The STEPS Walks are held on three separate dates in three separate locations across Steuben County:

· Saturday, May 4 at Steuben Square in Hornell in conjunction with the Wildflower Festival

· Saturday, May 11 at Pulteney Square in Bath

· Saturday, May 18 at Centerway Square in Corning

The day of the Walk, walkers gather in their chosen location to register and turn in any funds raised offline. Registration and programming begins at 9:00 a.m. Each location will offer different pre-walk programs, including musical entertainment. Opening remarks begin at 9:45 and the walk begins at 10:00 a.m. Bottled water donated by Culligan will be provided. If a walker is unable to participate on these dates and times, they are encouraged to walk on another date and time of their choosing, for example, at a favorite gym, park, bike path, or hiking trail.

Walkers may raise awareness and funds both online and in person. To get started online, please visit and click on the STEPS Walk sneaker icon supporting the Turning Point location of your choice and create your fundraising page. Your STEPS Walk fundraising page allows you to raise both awareness and funds online – use social media and email to share your cause and ask for others’ support, accept online donations, track your progress, connect with teammates and other walkers, and more!

Walkers may also register and turn in donations raised offline at the registration tables on the day of the Walks. Walkers are asked to please log donations raised offline on the Walker Sheet provided to satisfy Catholic Charites of Steuben’s reporting needs as a charitable organization. Walk materials, including Walker Sheets, Poverty Fact Cards, and Event Posters may be downloaded at or picked up in person at one of the following locations:

· Steuben County Rural Ministry, 34 West Main Street, Canisteo, NY

· Turning Point Hornell, 20 Elm Street, Suite 2, Hornell, NY

· Turning Point Bath, 23 Liberty Street, Bath, NY

· The Corning Information Center, 1 West Market Street, Corning, NY

100% of funds raised in your community stay in your community to benefit your neighbors in need. Turning Point services are mobile and available in your community from offices based in Canisteo, Hornell, Bath, and Corning. Walkers choose to which Turning Point location the funds they raise will go. Catholic Charities of Steuben operates at 8.5% administrative costs, meaning 91.5 cents on the dollar raised at the STEPS Walks goes toward Turning Point programs helping our neighbors in need.
