Red Cross to begin going home-to-home, handing out free smoke detectors

Starting this week, the American Red Cross will be installing 100,000 free smoke detectors across upstate New York.

The Red Cross says most fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and they collectively kill more people than all other natural disasters combined.

Volunteers will be going door-to-door in the Southern Tier from April 27 to May 12.

The alarms will be the new hard-wired or sealed-battery models that were made mandatory on April 1.
