Several local organizations met on Wednesday to hold an informational meeting ahead of the general election in November.
The event was organized by the Elmira-Corning branch of the NAACP, the Chemung County League of Women Voters and the Economic Opportunity Program. It was called “What You Should Know Before You Vote.”
Both the republican and democratic county committee chairs were at the meeting to answer questions about the presidential nominees. Elmira-Corning NAACP President Georgia Verdier says more discussions like the one at the meeting have to take place before heading to the polls.
“We want people to get better acquainted with issues and concerns that impact their lives,” Verdier said.
“On TV many times we’re hearing negativity and bashing and all and it’s so overwhelming it’s causing burnout so people are walking away or just being disappointed and not really in tune with what is really happening,” she said.
Officials say they’re already planning another similar event for early November, just before voters head to the polls November 8th.
