YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) — A shrine in Youngstown became the target of vandalism earlier this week.
The incident occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine.
The shrine says statues of Jesus and St. Gaudenza were both pushed over and severely damaged. Other statues were not as severely damaged, but did have pieces broken off of them.
Along with this, the shrine says a large urn, granite benches and a marble pillar were pushed over.
Overall, the damage is still being assessed, but could reach up to $50,000.
“Fatima Shrine seeks to be an Oasis of Peace for pilgrims, as we promote love for Jesus in the Catholic Tradition,” the shrine wrote in a news release.
They also say the vandalism is “an affront to those who hard earned donations acquired the damaged items and the tens of thousands of pilgrims who visit the Shrine each year.”
