Survivor of alleged sex abuse involving Buffalo Diocese speaks publicly for the first time

A man who claims to have been sexually abused by a priest in the 1980s spoke publicly about it for the first time on Tuesday.

The new case against the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo has been filed on behalf of James Bottlinger.

Bottlinger says he was abused by Rev. Michael Freeman from 1983-87. He declined the highest settlement offer in any New York Diocesan Compensation Program.

Bottlinger was joined by the law firms of Steve Boyd and Jeff Anderson & Associates to speak on the matter Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s the right thing to do, you’ve got to think about the future, protect these kids,” Bottlinger said. “The church is not going to change, they’re resisting change, so I think we have to see this through and make them change.”
