Market Street staple R&M Restaurant and Bar in Corning can now say its burgers are the best, in Upstate New York, that is.
R&M won the judge’s award for the best burger in Upstate New York from the website newyorkupstate.com. During the contest, three judges traveled to nominated hot spots for burgers all over the state to sample one normal and one specialty burger in order to find the best.
It’s something that came as shock to owner Robert Pierri, whose newest burger creation came to mind just days before the judges showed up help seal the deal.
“It was definitely unexpected, I don’t know who nominated us, I think it was urban Corning that nominated us and a few other places nominated us, people nominated us. We had no idea until we got an email from them that said we were winning and we just took it from there. The one (burger) they really seemed to like the most was a newer one that we had, The Big House Burger. It’s got marinated ground beef, banana peppers, a special house sauce that we use, and lettuce, tomato, onion, and Monterey Jack cheese, on toasted roll. And they tried the half-pounder of that one, and a regular half-pound cheese burger with everything on it, and that (Big House Burger) was the one that they seemed to be raving about online. The last three weeks, it’s been crazy. Crazy,” said Pierri.
The rolls for the burger also received rave reviews. They are made by Kountry Krullers bakery in Elmira.
R&M also came in second as the reader’s choice for the best burger in Upstate New York, coming in just behind The Burton, a bar in Allegany.
