Further north on Main Street from the Main Street Bridge, you may notice some road work going on.
Crews are placing utility lines beneath the street for the upcoming roundabout. Motorists and pedestrians should expect to see traffic controllers and detours.
The Elmira Department of Public Works said the project is state-funded, not only helping to build the roundabout, but also repair nearby streets.
“It accomplishes a lot of work all the way down to Second Street, over to Railroad Ave,” Craig Southard, the senior engineer with the City of Elmira Department of Public Works said. “So it helps us perform a lot of full-depth rehab that typically we can’t necessarily afford through our typical funding sources and budgets.”
Groundbreaking for the roundabout is expected to start the second week of May. It’s expected to be done by November.
