Siblings who lost both parents to cancer hosting annual memorial event

News

Peter Onofre passed away from lung cancer in 1990, at just 47 years old. 19 years later, his wife, Jean, passed away from breast cancer. The couple left behind three children, Mark, David, and Maryellen, who are determined to fight back against cancer in all its ugly forms.

They do so by hosting an annual event with the mission to help people in the community get the care they might not otherwise be able to afford, as well as to raise money for cancer research.

The 9th Annual Jean and Pete Memorial Event will be held on Saturday, April 27 at the South Waverly Borough Hall. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by opening announcements, several walks and runs for people of all ages, and a new this year, a vendor fair. For the full schedule, visit the event’s website.

Donations can be mailed to Maryellen Rhodes at 1736 Riverside Drive, Sayre, Pa, 18840. Checks can be made out to “Jean and Pete Memorial Event.” Donations can also be picked up – just call 607-857-6659.

All of the proceeds are divided evenly between the local Nancy Quattrini Fund at Guthrie, the American Lung Association, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
