A new event was held Wednesday to bring together business and government leaders to analyze, collaborate and grow the regional economy.
Southern Tier 8 launched its inaugural Industry Summit at the Holiday Inn in Binghamton.
Business leaders, politicians and economic officials from the 8 counties served gathered to discuss mutual challenges and share best practices.
Aside from the structured networking, there was a series of speakers discussing the benefits of industry clusters and regional collaboration.
Southern Tier 8 Executive Director Jen Gregory said her organization has access to federal funding that can be used to address large problems in the area.
“This is one government program where we’re not competing against each other but with each other. We should start looking at ourselves as though we are expanding together and our competition is global,” Gregory said.
Gregory said the event also serves as a way to introduce Southern Tier 8 to the business community.
Her organization plans two more summits next year, one focused on agriculture, food and beverage.
Meanwhile, Gregory said Southern Tier 8 will be working to address infrastructure deficiencies in broadband, energy, housing and transportation.
