As part of a statewide crackdown on drunk driving throughout the holidays, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office wants drivers to stay safe on the roads.
The STOP-DWI Thanksgiving Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
Police will be out in full force conducting checkpoints and patrolling for impaired or distracted drivers, especially since the Sheriff’s Office has seen a spike in DWI arrests in Steuben County within the past year.
“Our hope is that the more we are visible, the more we can remind people to be responsible,” Jim Allard, Steuben County Sheriff, said.
The Sheriff’s Office also said high-visibility patrol can reduce impaired driving death rates by as much as 20 percent.
As millions of people will be hitting the road this Thanksgiving weekend to celebrate with family and friends, it’s important to plan ahead to avoid turning that celebration into a preventable tragedy.
