The Food Bank of the Southern Tier pulls off a successful Fill the Bus campaign

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The numbers are in for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier’s 2019 Fill the Bus campaign.

Wegmans shoppers donated 135,000 pounds of food during the drive that took place on August 25 through September 7. This year’s camp 73% increase in pounds raised over last year’s donation.

Shoppers purchased $137,000 of BackPack foods throughout the campaign. The results were announced today as Food Bank staff visited Wegmans stores in Ithaca and Elmira, thanking store employees and honoring the top fundraising cashiers.

Five Wegmans stores in the Southern Tier participated in the campaign: Corning, Elmira, Hornell, Ithaca and Johnson City. All of the food collected will remain in the Southern Tier community and benefit the Food Bank’s BackPack Program, which provides children at risk of hunger with a bag full of kid-friendly, nutritious food to take home each Friday throughout the school year and before school breaks.

Corning over 30,000 lbs
