ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) An Elmira man is in custody Friday after walking around with a shotgun near the campus of Elmira College, according to officials with the Elmira Police Department.
34-year-old Jason Lopez entered and exited a house on the 600-block of Columbia Street during the day Friday with the shotgun wrapped in a blanket, police said.
Lopez is a convicted felon who had a warrant out for his arrest.
Elmira City Police said Lopez tried to get rid of the gun by leaving it on the porch of the home. He was ultimately located at the house with the shotgun and arrested for possession the weapon by Elmira City Police.
Shotgun shells were also found in his pocket. Police said he purchased the gun from someone else and they do not know Lopez’s intent at this time. He’s currently being held in the Chemung County Jail.
