Police charge man for Dandy robbery

UPDATE: Anthony J. Thomas, 56, of Elmira, was arrested and charged with Burglary in the third degree; a class D felony, after a robbery Thursday morning at the E. Church Street Dandy Mini Mart.

Thomas is currently being held in the City lockup pending arraignment in Elmira City Court later this evening.

On June 27, 2019 at around 4:30 am, officers responded to the Dandy Mini Mart located at 908 E. Church Street in the City of Elmira for a report of a burglary that had just been discovered. Officers learned that a male suspect threw a rock and broke the glass of one of the store doors. The suspect then entered the store and stole several packs of cigarettes and cigars. The suspect fled the scene on a bicycle.

Images captured from store security cameras were posted on social media. The Elmira Police Department received several tips from the public based on these images.

Officers located the suspect at the transportation center as he was attempting to leave town by bus.

The suspect was interviewed by investigators while a residence on the Southside of the city was searched. Evidence of the crime was located during the search.

The Elmira Police Department would like to thank those members of the community who contributed to the quick apprehension of the suspect.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) The Elmira Police Department is investigating an overnight burglary.

The man pictured above threw a rock in the window of the Dandy Mini Mart on East Church St. at 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
