SOUTHPORT, N.Y. (WETM – TV) – A Southport woman convicted of twenty one counts of animal abuse was sentenced today.

Cherie Middaugh was charged and convicted of neglectful care of twenty six horses on a farm in Southport.

According to Chemung County Assistant District Jordan Yorke she was sentenced to 180 days in jail.

Middaugh was ordered to pay restitution for the care of the horses. That amount is yet to be determined and will be addressed at a future court appearance.

An animal foster said she’s happy to be moving forward.

“First and foremost, continuing care of the horses until they could be adopted out,” said Animal Foster Beth Prentice. “We are hoping to raise fro Elmira Animal Shelter and then the rest is going to be donated to the Town of Southport.”

A fundraiser will be held at the Chemung County fairgrounds on August 31 and September 1.

Prentice said the horses are doing well and are very happy.
