TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. – A Tioga County man will spend six months in jail for the accidental shooting death of his hunting companion last December.
Dean Brockoff, 54, of Lockwood pleaded guilty this week to criminally negligent homicide. Brockoff admitted that, prior to legal sunrise on Dec. 9, he shot at movement on land off Miller Hollow Road in Lockwood and struck his hunting partner, 73-year-old David Barden.
Barden was transported to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, where he later died.
Both the Brockoff and Barden had permission to be on the property.
DEC Region 7 Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) and the Lockwood Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a hunting-related shooting incident (HRSI) at 8:30 a.m.
Brockoff was arrested by DEC investigators and charged with manslaughter in the second degree, a class C felony.
Brockoff was sentenced to six months in jail, five years of probation and over 500 hours of community service.
He also lost his ability to own firearms and must stay away from Barden’s widow
