UPDATE (12:53 p.m.): Elmira Police Department Detective Captain Tony Alvernaz tells 18 News that the body discovered was found in a makeshift shelter with trash bags, leading to the conclusion that he was homeless.
The Elmira Police Department says the human remains found Thursday on the Lackawanna Rail Trail are likely those of a homeless male in his mid-sixties.
No foul play is expected, and the identity of the male will not be confirmed or released until DNA results are obtained and a family is notified.
The Department says they came to that conclusion with the help of an independent Forensic Anthropologist.
18 News was first on the scene Thursday afternoon after a man walking his dog discovered the remains on the trail near Washington Ave. in Elmira.
