NEWFANE, N.Y. (WROC) — Sheriff’s deputies from Niagara, Monroe and Wayne Counties are working to unravel a mystery surrounding the discovery of a body in the back of a woman’s pickup truck.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, the body was found just after 11 a.m. on Friday in the parking lot of a Tops store on Lockport-Olcott Road in the Town of Newfane.
Sheriff James Voutour says the woman left the Town of Ontario in Wayne County on Friday morning and was headed to Niagara County to go camping. She made a brief stop in Monroe County before traveling through Orleans County and stopping at the Tops store in Newfane, north of Lockport.
Investigators say she opened the tailgate of her truck to put groceries in the bed and that’s when she found the body. The woman did not recognize the man and police have not yet been able to identify him.
The body was taken to Erie County Medical Center for an autopsy.
Right now, sheriff’s deputies believe the body ended up in the woman’s truck while it was still in the Town of Ontario. They are focusing their investigation on the Ridge Road area.
Deputies are also searching the area where the woman stopped in Monroe County hoping there may be clues that can shed some light on the bizarre situation.
