Adults take the time to volunteer with children in Elmira City School District

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Circle of friends is an international program under the Family Services of Chemung County, that operates within the Elmira City School District. Each week, around 35 community volunteers visit around 110 students Kindergarten through 6th in the district.

The program takes place during lunch hour. Students and their adult volunteer eat and talk together. Social lessons, like how to interact in a group of peers or with adults, is the primary focus of their visits.

After lunch they play games together, and work on food activities, arts and crafts, and community projects they share with other organizations like nursing homes and hospitals.

Assistant Principal of Diven Elementary, Jo Legare says "It's a great opportunity for partnerships to be developed within the community between agencies and the school district. I really think that's what the community schools program is all about, being able to partner with all of the great resources we have in our area and being able to bring people into the school and work with the schools."
