BIG FLATS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - The $58 million project to expand the passenger terminal at Elmira-Corning Regional Airport in Big Flats is running right on schedule according to airport officials.
Most of the project's cost is covered by a $40 million grant from the state.
What was a pile of rubble is now showing progress of the new center section.
Originally, airport officials thought they had three or four years to complete the expansion. That timeline was shortened to just 18 months.
"I had to go to a meeting at Albany on Tuesday where the center section was not up but when I came back Wednesday it was up, so it is moving really fast," said aviation director Bill Hopper. "When you're moving this fast, there's different permits you have to get, especially from the FAA and those took a little bit of time, now we're getting ready to start catching up, we're going to have all the steel up and we're looking to do a lot of interior work and coming up with the plan to keep us on schedule."
The renovation is expected to be completed on October 31, 2018.
