Black bear sightings in Wellsboro

WELLSBORO, Pa. (18 NEWS) - A Wellsboro woman got the video of her life when she encountered a family of black bears crossing the road.

Just like any family on a summer day, a mama bear and her three cubs decided to go for a stroll in Wellsboro on Route 6 near Gaines.

The video shows the mom waiting as her cubs cross over the road.  Lisa Button captured the incredible scene on Saturday, August 19.

"I don't remember breathing, I was out of breath just trying to get the shot and get the video," said Button.

Button tells 18 News she was on her way to a class reunion and pulled over on the side of the road when she first saw the mama bear. Button says she quickly grabbed her camera in the back seat, got the lense cap off and started zooming in on the bears,  she didn't know the cubs were there until she started filming.

"I had thought that was it and I had missed her because she was on the other side of the road and she turned around and became the crossing guard for the little babies and when the babies came out I was just amazed of what I was seeing," said Button.

It's not unusual to see black bears during the day in Tioga County.  Another black bear was spotted on Route 6 near Galeton in the same week.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission says if you encounter a black bear, it's best to make a loud noise from a distance or leave them alone.

Bears typically don't show signs of aggression unless they're with cubs or feel threatened.

If you see a bear, contact local authorities and in the event the bear presents an immediate threat, call 911.
