ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - A company is proposing to build a new cell tower in the Town of Big Flats. One entity concerned-- the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport.
The Chemung County Planning Board discussed an application for the cell tower close to the airport.
The airport's director of aviation, Bill Hopper, said he does not reject having a cell tower in the area so long as it doesn't interfere with airport operations.
"It's really important for all of us, in terms of regional economic development, that there are no impacts to the airport, which is such a tremendous asset to us," Nicolette Wagoner, the Chemung County Planning Commissioner, said. "When the cell tower goes up, if it goes forward, that it's done in a way that everyone is agreeable to."
The board tabled the application. it will be discussed further in three weeks.
The same company also proposed to construct a second tower in Big Flats along Hendy Creek Road. The board approved that application.
The Town, however, has the final say if any tower gets built or not.
