WAVERLY, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - There are a lot of dogs, and a lot of kittens at the Stray Haven SPCA animal shelter where right now, the shelter is at max capacity.
"We need the proper space," Kevin Craig, the executive director at Stray Haven SPCA, said. "Also dogs and cats generally don't thrive in environments like this."
And they're getting more animals day by day.
"We do try to save every single one," Craig said. "So we do try to make space for any dog or cat that may need our help."
But these animals are hoping a family will make them a member.
"They're man's best friend so they do tend to be better when they're in a home-like setting," Craig said.
Hence the initiative "Clear the Shelters," a campaign between local NBC stations and the SPCA with one goal-- make sure these lovable critters find a home.
And while they are lovable and cute, there are other reasons why people should consider adopting an animal from Stray Haven SPCA, or any other shelter before making a trip to the pet store.
"It's not only good for the dog or cat to find a home," Craigh said, "but it is also low cost, low impact on the family as well."
The costs are generally low, but do vary from each shelter. They even provide pet food free of charge.
