Corning Community College commencement 2018

CORNING, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - It was quite rainy today, but even a little bit of rain couldn't stop the show.

Despite the gloomy weather, the gymnasium at Corning Community College, was full of people eager to see their loved ones cross the stage to receive their diplomas.

659 students received Associates degrees at this years 59th commencement exercises.

This years graduating class was a very diverse one. Graduates represented 4 different countries and 33 were enlisted in the armed forces. The oldest graduate was 62 and the youngest was just 17.

While each graduate overcame their own set obstacles to get to this big day, there was one in particular, that stood out from the rest.

Ashlyn Hartman is just 17 years old. Today she graduates with an Individual Studies associates degree, and in a couple of weeks she will graduate from Corning-Painted Post High School.

Ashlyn is not the first person in her family to graduate from college before high school. Each of her older siblings did as well. Just as she followed her siblings, she hopes others will follow her.

This fall, Ashlyn will head to the University of Buffalo to pursue a bachelors degree in Biology and Pre- Medical studies. After her two years there, she then plans to go off to medical school to follow her dream of becoming an anesthesiologist.

Big dreams for a bright girl.
