CORNING, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - The Corning Community Food Pantry is officially operating out of a new location as of Wednesday.
As need for the community has gotten bigger, so has the space. The new multifaceted location enhances the pantry's mission to feed and educate.
After 10 years at its previous location, the new site allows for the expansion of daily services and operations in a three-building complex.
"We're not a mom-and-pop pantry," Executive Director Beth Wasson said. "We're not one that would be in a church... (not) faith-base pantry. We do quite a business."
Quite a business indeed distributing over 300,000 lbs of food last year to almost 26,000 individuals.
Clients normally receive groceries to last between five to seven days.
In addition to the food pantry providing food to residents, it also has personal care products to help fit basic human needs like shampoo, toothpaste, diapers, and feminine products.
There's also a full kitchen to educate staff and clients through cooking classes and demonstrations.
Students attend hunger-awareness and food insecure classes in a separate room to learn about the issue facing the community and help in the pantry when needed.
On-site community foundations also give residents a place to meet to get more information on social services like food stamps and financial assistance.
"This is a unique opportunity thanks to many... generous, kind individuals who care about food insecurity in our area," Wasson said.
The food pantry is a member agency of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. The staff is fully made up of volunteers.
