Funeral services for couple killed in motorcycle accident announced; how to donate to children

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Mathew Matteson, 43 and his wife, Harolyn Matteson, 42, leave behind three children after they were killed after a car struck their motorcycle, on Tuesday evening.

Their obituaries can be found on the Mcinerny Funeral Home website.  Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 10:15 a.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, Elmira.

The families are reaching out to the public for donations to The Matteson Children's Fund, which will go directly towards the three children the couple leaves behind.

Their spokesperson, Christina Sonsire, an attorney and partner with Ziff Law Firm in Elmira, said the family is going through both shock and grief, and the outpouring of love and support from the community has been overwhelming for them.

Sonsire said between $50,000-$60,000 has been donated so far. The family wants the public to know how thankful they are, and that all donations will be funneled to a single trust.

Anyone can donate to that trust directly by sending a check to the Chemung Canal Trust Company, made out to the Matteson Children's Trust.

Caden Charnetski, 18, was driving the car that struck the motorcycle, and has been charged with driving while under the influence of drugs. He has not been charged with manslaughter. Sonsire said the investigation is still ongoing, and the potential for additional criminal charges is pending.
