DEVELOPING: 15-year-old killed following hit and run

CHEMUNG, N.Y. - UPDATE:: According to state police in Horseheads, this is not a "hit and run" as they first thought. The 19- year-old driver thought he hit a deer, and when he realized it was not, he returned to the scene. Police say they are not revealing the drivers name, because no charges have been filed at this time. Police are still awaiting the results from the accident reconstruction team.

A developing story about a 15 year old girl who was struck and killed by a car is underway. As of right now, neighbors were able to tell us that the New York State police and emergency crews arrived at the scene at about 9:30 last night.

18 News was able to speak to the victim's grandmother who tells us her name is Xanadu Rumsey, a "sweet, beautiful girl." She also tells us Xanadu was walking home with her father along County Route 60 before she was struck.

One neighbor says she saw emergency crews giving Xanadu CPR. New York State police say they are still investigating and a press release is expected to be released by the end of the day.

The family say they are in financial distress right now. Anyone who would like to reach out or help the family can contact Darlene Rumsey at (607) 877- 4022.
