Dundee musician hits the big screen

PENN YAN, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - A local musician is hitting the big screen, playing a role in the hit movie franchise Pitch Perfect 3.

A special screening of the movie took place at the Lake Street Plaza Theatre in Penn Yan Sunday morning.

It was a packed house as the audience came to meet Dundee native Bobby Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald's band Whiskey Shivers play "Saddle Up" in Pitch Perfect 3, co-starring alongside Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson.

Fitzgerald tells 18 News it was a Craigslist ad that eventually got the band the part in the movie.

"Our guitarist posted the ad called Eye Candy Lawn Service and it was just pictures of him oiled up wearing these tiny pink shorts just like trimming your hedges, like mowing the lawn, saying like hey ladies you need some lawn work done?" said Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald says the ad went viral and got the attention of Pitch Perfect 3 movie director Trish Sie through a mutual friend.  The band later became friends with the director.

More on that story is posted on the band's website:

"I truly just emailed them one day and said, ‘Can you guys please come be in Pitch Perfect?’ And they probably thought I was kidding or crazy or delusional or drunk, but they’re like,‘Sure.’ And so here they are. They’re barefoot most of the time. They drive around in a van. They play a suitcase for a kick drum. This is them. They are down- home, salt-of-the-earth guys,” said Sie.

The band lives in Austin, Texas but Fitzgerald came home for the special screening where a portion of the ticket sales benefit a music program at his alma mater, Dundee Central School where he participated in many music programs.

"He always kind of had that it factor about him whatever that is, you know, the first time he came to my house, big smile on his face and you know, I'm not surprised but obviously I'm very, very proud of him in what he's accomplished," said longtime friend Roy Litteer.

Fitzgerald had this message to inspire others in his hometown:

"If you work hard and keep at it, you're going to find yourself going somewhere and this is all stuff, anything that I've been lucky enough to experience come from exactly that, just hustling, hustling, hustling and believing what makes you feel all right is all right."

Pitch Perfect 3 is still out in theaters.

128 people filled the theater Sunday.  Tickets were $10 that included a small popcorn and soda.  $1.50 per ticket benefits Dundee Central School's Music Boosters.

Owners of the Lake Street Plaza Theatre matched the total donations raised which came out to a total of $384 that will benefit the music program.
