Forecast Discussion: 1/14/19 AM

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) -

AVERAGE HIGH FOR JANUARY 14TH: 33°

AVERAGE LOW FOR JANUARY 14TH: 15°

MONDAY SUNRISE: 7:34 AM

MONDAY SUNSET: 4:59 PM

A bitterly cold but sunny start to the work week as wake-up temperatures begin in the single digits and teens. Dry cold arctic high pressure dominates the region Monday. Mostly sunny skies in store for the Twin Tiers for Monday with high temperatures rising near average for this time of year, in the lower-30s. A light northwesterly wind flow will continue to pump cold arctic air into the northeastern region from Canada. High pressure resides over the area so the Twin Tiers remains dry and quiet throughout the day.

The weather pattern remains quiet but cold tonight. Temperatures drop to the mid-teens overnight with cloud cover gradually increasing. Winds shift out of the west, anywhere from 0-10 mph.

High pressure moves off to the east, allowing a weak wave to slide in early Tuesday morning. The chance for flurries is possible early Tuesday for areas around the Finger Lakes, but the majority of the Twin Tiers remains dry throughout the afternoon. Shallow lake clouds may sneak into areas of the Finger Lakes allowing for partly sunny skies for Tuesday afternoon. A clipper system slides in Wednesday, generating some flurries and light snow showers in some spots. Thursday afternoon looks to remain mostly sunny but light snow may develop Thursday night as moisture moves in from the Ohio Valley. A strong area of low pressure looks to be in the the works for Friday night into Saturday with another round of snow possibly developing Sunday. Model guidance is still uncertain of the exact track and expected snow totals from these two systems as they are not in agreement.
