HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Hundreds of people filled His Tabernacle Family Church, in Horseheads, Tuesday afternoon, to pay their final respects to Christopher Truax Jr.
Truax was a U.S. Marine Corps sergeant and Horseheads native. He was shot and killed Sept. 7 in San Diego, California.
Truax's funeral consisted of full military honors with a 21-gun salute. A burial will follow on Wednesday, at Woodlawn National Cemetery, in Elmira.
According to the San Diego Sheriff's Department, the 21-year-old was found in a parked vehicle in the City of Lemon Grove, California, bleeding from a gunshot wound.
Traux's death is currently an open murder investigation, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Truax's family said they are stunned as to why police have yet to find a suspect.
Along with his parents and relatives, Truax has left behind his wife and 1-year-old son, Christopher Truax III.
A GoFundMe page was created by his family to set up a trust fund for Truax's son.
