Horseheads Fire Department discusses fire prevention

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - The Horseheads Fire Department held its annual fire prevention open house.

The event, teaches the public not only the dangers of fire and how to prevent one, but shows them how firefighters spring into action when called to an emergency. The event is geared to teach kids, but even the adults benefit as well.

"Mainly kids because if they learn as a child what they need to do to be safe and that they have to check their smoke detectors and things like that," Nicole Wright, a firefighter and EMT with the Horseheads Fire Department, said. "It'll stay with them and family is involved and they're all on the same page."

Some people went home with smoke detectors as prizes from a raffle. People even got a chance to see their local firefighters spring into action by extricating a car.

According to the Red Cross, you only have an average of two minutes to escape a burning house.
