Police investigating early morning shooting on Elmira's Southside


On December 3, 2017 at around 2:23 AM, the Elmira Police Department responded to the area of 604 Broadway Ave for a report of a gunshot.  

Upon arrival, officers learned from witnesses that a long gun had been discharged in that area.  

A 19-year-old Painted Post man advised that another male had attempted to shoot him after the two had a dispute.  

The shooter was said to have entered the upstairs residence of 604 Broadway Ave. No injuries were reported. 

Officers secured a perimeter and closed area streets.   

Elmira Police SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene.  Negotiators were eventually able to gain the cooperation from the apartment occupants and the matter was resolved peacefully. 

A loaded semi-automatic assault rifle was located at the residence as well as other evidence of a shooting. 

Detective Bureau investigators spoke with several individuals. 

Shane R. Adams, 19 of Pine City, NY, was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm 2nd, a class C felony.  Additional charges may be filed in the future.  Adams is being held in the Elmira City lock up awaiting arraignment in Elmira City Court. 

The Elmira Police Department was assisted at the scene and with city coverage by the New York State Police, the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, the West Elmira Police Department, the Elmira Heights Police Department and the Horseheads Police department.

Elmira Police are investigating an early morning shooting in Elmira's Southside.

Officers were dispatched to a residence on the 600 block of Broadway close to 2:30 a.m. Sunday.  

The call was for a reported gunshot fired from a long gun, shot from a suspect outside the residence.

EPD, a SWAT team and crisis negotiators responded to a dispute between two males that led to one shot being fired outside the residence.

Negotiators were able to make contact with the occupants inside the residence and gained cooperation that ended the incident peacefully. 

Approximately five people were inside.  An assault style rifle was recovered at the scene during the investigation.

The scene was secured with the assistance of New York State Police, Chemung County Sheriff's Office, and the West Elmira Police Department.

Nobody was injured in this shooting.  Police have a suspect in custody with charges expected.

At this time, police are speaking with the occupants as the investigation continues.
