ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - New York City may be four-and-a-half hours away by car, but that doesn't mean kids in our area can't enjoy a Broadway musical.
The splendor of Broadway hits Elmira with big-name shows that children can enjoy, minus the crowds of Time Square. It's all made possible through the Kids Night on Broadway program.
"It's a way to introduce children to Broadway musicals and other productions," Karen Cromer, the executive director of the Clemens Center, said. "Sometimes they don't get out to see a live performance."
It's the first night the Clemens Center held the event. There were activities and kids even got the chance to spend time with the cast of that night's show-- the award-winning musical, Stomp.
"My boys are drummers and we love Stomp," Sara Wills, a mother who brought her boys to the event, said. "We went online and saw they were playing here so we got tickets."
Wills said she's seen Stomp once before on Broadway. But it's the first time for her kids.
"We saw it at school once," The kids in her group said. "We saw it at school once. My mom was showing me videos."
One of the kids, Joel, said he's a drummer, and wanted to see how the show's performers played their rendition of drums.
"I've been doing it for a pretty long time now and I wanted to see one where they do drums a lot," Joel, one of the kids, said. "I'm looking forward to it."
"I'm looking forward to everything," Micah, another one of the kids, said.
While these kids could have been home playing videogames, they got the chance to interact with the show. It's a facet of the program that Cromer says helps to develop a child's mind.
"I hope that they learn that a live performance might be a good alternative to some of those in-the-house, in-the-basement games and things that kids do solo," Cromer said, "to get them socialized a little bit more, get them out and experience something in a beautiful theater like we have here in Elmira."
Cromer says there will be more of these evenings for future shows. She just could not say for which shows.
